The Davis Center
Williams College seeks a creative, dynamic individual as the Associate Director of the Davis Center. Named for scholar-activists W. Allison Davis '24 and John A. Davis '33, the Center catalyzes broad campus engagement with complex issues of race, gender, culture, ethnicity, history and identity as they affect intellectual, creative, and social life. Collaborating with all sectors of the college communityâ€"students, staff, academic departments and programs, and alumniâ€"and with off-campus partners, the Center initiates and supports a rich variety of programs that seek to foster dialogue about access, equity, and inclusion at Williams and elsewhere. Its work is central to the core academic and institutional values of the college.
The Associate Director of the Davis Center will possess a deep knowledge of diversity and equity issues, particularly as they relate to gender, sexuality, race, and ethnicity. The ideal candidate is especially proficient in advancing efforts and issues impacting the LGBTQA community and communities of color. The Associate Director will assume leadership in the Davis Center by way of program development, the enrichment of relationships, and in lending their expertise to furthering the strategic vision of the center. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to building diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities and have experience serving historically underrepresented or underserved students.
The Associate Director is a key member of the staff at the college and reports to the Director of the Davis Center. The Associate Director will be skilled in facilitating campus conversations on issues of inclusion and equity, including topics surrounding policy and best practice as it pertains to social identity. In addition, the Associate Director may serve [as a co-chair/chair] on committees or initiatives, and will organize efforts in collaboration with stakeholders across campus. The Associate Director's responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Fostering educational opportunities for students, faculty and staff to engage in discourse around issues of sexuality, gender, race, class, ethnicity, nationality, religion, and spirituality;
- Supporting diverse LGBTQA populations on campus;
- Supporting student organizations and initiatives that reinforce the positive experience of historically underrepresented and underserved students;
- Advising, supporting, and developing students;
- Facilitating community building on and off campus through partnerships that provide opportunities for student development;
- Engaging stakeholders across campus to ensure students have meaningful access to the college's existing resources, and thinking critically about additional resources that may be necessary;
- Promoting access to learning opportunities through collaborations with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the broader community;
- Fostering cross-cultural competencies and a positive campus climate;
- Developing Davis Center programs; and
- Mentoring and advocating for students throughout the college.
This position is a full-time, year-round appointment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. A Ph.D., terminal degree, or master's degree in an appropriate field is preferred, though candidates with a bachelor's degree will be considered. Candidates should highlight experience in student development, teaching, and/or research.
