Description & Requirement The Division of Humanities and Communication, an integrated program incorporating humanities and allied social sciences, seeks an Assistant Professor uniquely qualified and committed to educating working-class, ethnically diverse, and historically under-served students through innovation in interdisciplinary teaching and learning, scholarship, community service, and collaborative and imaginative program development. The Division delivers thirteen concentrations, one of which is Journalism and Media Studies. The concentration includes courses such as Social Impact of the Mass Media, Free Speech and Responsibility, Media Ethics, History According to the Movies, Reporting, News Writing, Media Production Lab, and Investigative Reporting. The Division of Humanities and Communication is part of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences which includes programs in Visual and Public Art, Social and Behavioral Sciences, Global Studies, World Languages and Cultures, and Music and Performing Arts.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and teach innovative and interdisciplinary courses to fulfill learning outcomes in the Human Communication Major and the Concentration in Journalism and Media Studies and lower division communication courses. Coordinate and provide curricular leadership to this Concentration, serve as principal subject advisor, develop internships and other learning opportunities for students. Periodically, teach Major Proseminar and Senior Capstone, and lower division courses fulfilling related University Learning Requirements.
Serve as faculty advisor to the campus-wide student newspaper and collaborate with faculty from across the campus to develop programming in journalism. Establish Service Learning pedagogical opportunities in local communities. Contribute to new media pedagogy and outcomes-based program development in the Division; serve on Division, College and University-wide committees or task forces.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
An earned doctorate or equivalent terminal degree but an M.A. with extensive professional experience, in the field of journalism, communication studies, or allied disciplines may also be considered.
Ability to teach reporting, media studies, and communication courses.
Ability to apply contemporary theoretical approaches to curricula in media studies, print and broadcast journalism, media literacy, and/or professional ethics.
Promise of scholarly research directly related to Journalism and Media Studies.
Record of professional service activities.
Skills required for coordinating programs and advising students.
Competence in teaching and mentoring students from nontraditional, working class, and ethnically diverse backgrounds.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
Second language proficiency.
Ability to teach advanced coursework in media literacy, communication studies,and professional ethics.
Knowledge of second language and experience in bilingual/bicultural, multilingual/multicultural contexts.
Skill in cross-cultural, experiential and assets-based pedagogy and teaching.
Ability to team-teach and develop cross-disciplinary conversations.
Interest in developing applied research.
Familiarity with new media in the Humanities or ability to apply new media to effective pedagogy.
Knowledge of outcomes-based or other innovative assessment models.
