POSITION SUMMARY:  The Center for Biomedical Engineering is looking for a part-time Services Intern to work in the area of nano-fiber scaffolds for heart valve tissue engineering. The chosen candidate will develop and execute novel experiments using chemical and biological techniques, including but not limited to: fabrication of biocompatible polymeric nanofibers using an established electrospinning technique, characterizing resulting fibers and scaffolds, harvesting and culturing porice heart valve cells, and characterizing cellular activity in scaffolds. As part of his/her duties, the candidate will be responsible for procuring the materials and chemicals necessary to conduct experiments, perform calculations related to the preparation (by density, volume, and molarity) of chemical and biological solutions. The candidate must follow established, safe laboratory procedures, or if no protocol exists, he/she should discuss with the PI and senior students in the laboratory how to establish such a protocol. In addition, this individual will be responsible for conveying the results of experiments with the PI and other group members, including in written (e.g. a laboratory notebook) and oral formats (e.g. present findings in public presentations). The candidate will also contribute to group training manuals, and train new co-workers. This individual will also be responsible for cleaning and the upkeep of the Tissue Culture Facility as needed and outlined by the PI.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Successful completion of junior or senior year of high school.

Age 16 or older at date of hire; Must be in the care of a parent or guardian if under the age of 18.  

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Experience working in a polymer synthesis and materials characterization laboratory setting
Experience with:
Electrospinning polymeric materials
Application of polymeric biomaterials
Use of computational calculations using ImageJ and/or SPOT software packages
Working in a mammalian cell laboratory setting
