Detailed Description:

The Development Manager, under the direction of the Director of Development, and in coordination with the Dean of the School of Business, assists in the implementation of effective fundraising strategies, donor solicitations, and stewardship of targeted constituents in the context of increased, campus-wide fundraising goals. This position is responsible for increasing the revenue generated from external sources, primarily President's Club level prospects and below, consisting of alumni, parents and friends of the School.

The Development Manager must be a team player with the goal to move the vision of the School of Business forward. This position manages the day-to-day business operations of the School's Development Department to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and adherence to university policies. This position provides executive-level support to the Director and in all areas relating to the Development Department's multi-faceted internal and external activities, initiatives, and projects. This position reviews fundraising proposals and manages the process of gift acknowledgements. The Development Manager represents the School of Business at events, conferences, and other off-campus activities. This position receives supervision from the Director of Development, School of Business and exercises supervision over the volunteers and student workers in the Development Office as assigned.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Office Administration
  • Manages the workflow for development packages - includes donor information and pertinent marketing materials - used by Director and Dean for visits with donors and prospects; supervises student worker assigned to assemble packets.
  • Provides administrative support to the Director including making travel arrangements, preparing expense reports, scheduling meetings, reserving rooms, photocopying, filing, ordering office supplies, etc. as needed.
  • Proofreads and finalizes all proposals for donors and prospects; processes and reports all gifts that are received directly by the SB.
  • Responsible for maintaining confidential SB donor information in the Advance database; timely contact reporting, extracting reports, and donor research as needed.
  • Responsible for managing SB Development budget; tracks selected SB restricted and endowment accounts.
  • Creates reports and presentations utilizing Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and other software programs for use by the Director and Dean.
  • All other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor.

Development Management and Outreach
  • Leads management of all annual giving components for the SB, including but not limited to: e-solicitations, direct mail, tele-funding, online giving, and class gift programs - includes creation and execution of programs, ongoing tracking/management and back-end analysis, and gift acknowledgement and reporting. Works collaboratively and in conjunction with the central Office of Annual Giving.
  • Strategies with the Director to determine the best outreach strategy including use of social media platforms.
  • Identifies, researches, cultivates, and solicits prospects to build a personal portfolio of donors to meet campaign goals.
  • Travels as needed locally or outside the San Diego area to meet with donors - Plans and executes donor cultivation events scheduled both on and off campus.
  • Oversees and coordinates stewardship for all levels of gifts to the SB consisting of gift acknowledgement communications. Collaboratively works with the Director of Marketing to ensure effectiveness and consistency of communication.
  • In direct collaboration with the Director, plans, coordinates, and executes ten to twelve development trips per year for SB Dean and Director of Development. This involves initiating contact with alumni, parents, donors and prospects, securing meetings, and finalizing travel schedules for trips both nationally and internationally. Initiates and coordinates with Advancement Services to procure prospect lists.
  • In collaboration with the Director, stewards major gift donors.
  • With the Director, manages the relationships with the volunteer SB Board of Advisors - responsible for scheduling meetings, preparing all materials for meetings, taking minutes and preparing and coordinating appropriate follow-up with Board members.
  • Coordinates with Financial Aid and other respective school areas to ensure scholarships are awarded and tracks the completion of thank you letters to donors from SB and students recipients.
  • Assists with organizing endowment reports, writing letters and preparing packages for donors.
  • Cooperatively works with Alumni Relations Manager to maximize alumni engagement.


Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree and 3 years of development, marketing, and/or administrative experience.
  • Experience in developing and managing administrative systems.
  • Good command of the English language including grammar, spelling, punctuation, formats, proofreading, syntax.
  • Complete understanding of all aspects required to secure person to person appointments.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Four to five years of development, marketing, and/or administrative experience.
  • Proven track record in developing and managing administrative systems.
  • Proven track record in cold calling and successfully securing person to person appointments.
  • Ability to motivate, create a sense of urgency and gain commitment with prospective donors.
  • Foreign language desirable.

  • Expertise in Microsoft Office, the internet, and database management (Advance preferred).
  • Ability to discern problems and facilitate resolutions.

  • Organized, analytical, and able to meet deadlines.
