Director of Special Academic Programs

The Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity at Williams College is hiring a Director of Special Academic Programs (OSAP). The mission of the OSAP is to make sure all students thrive academically at Williams and beyond through opportunities and programs that work to eradicate racial and socio-economic disparities in higher education. The Director of Special Academic Programs will possess a deep knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion matters, and be proficient in advancing efforts positively impacting individuals from groups historically underrepresented or underserved. The director will report to the Vice President for Institutional Diversity and Equity who is a member of the college's senior staff.

Our expectation is that the successful candidate will excel at working in a community that is broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity, economic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation and religion. In a cover letter, applicants should describe how they will embrace the college's commitment to fostering an inclusive community, experience developing and/or supporting student research and academic programs, as well as their experience working with faculty and also individuals from historically marginalized or underserved groups.

Primary responsibilities include the administration of three programs that serve students from groups underrepresented in higher education: the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship (MMUF), the Allison Davis Research Fellowship (ADRF), and the Summer Humanities and Social Sciences program (SHSS). The director oversees the design and implementation of each of these programs, the recruitment of students, into the programs, faculty and staff hiring within the programs, budgeting, and assessment. The director also serves as the campus liaison to the Creating Connections Consortium (C3) Undergraduate Program, the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers, the Leadership Alliance, and other opportunities for students from underrepresented groups. Other responsibilities include recruiting new fellows, budget management, supervising the program assistant, assisting program alumni with graduate school applications, and collaborating with other programs and offices on and off campus. The director is a critical and contributing member of the Office of Institutional Diversity and Equity. A successful candidate will: demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of student development and of academic pathways and careers; be competent in designing and implementing new and existing programs, working with students individually and in groups, and collaborating with faculty, librarians, and other staff educators; and have excellent communication and strong organizational and programming skills.

This position is a full-time, year-round appointment. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. A terminal or master's degree is required, PhD preferred, with at least five years of relevant experience. For optimal consideration, submit a resume and cover letter by April 8, 2019.
