Vice President of University Advancement
University of San Diego

The University of San Diego invites applications and nominations for the Vice President of University Advancement.

The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic institution, animated by the Catholic intellectual tradition and the interwoven humanist tradition of liberal arts education. It is committed to expanding liberal, scientific and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service. For more information about USD's history, please visit http://www.sandiego.edu/about/.

The Vice President for University Advancement is responsible for the leadership and direction of institutional advancement programs within the context of the Catholic mission and values of the university. S/he will be responsible for the planning, management, and execution of a comprehensive advancement program, including oversight of all fundraising initiatives. This executive will serve as part of the President's Cabinet and the senior management team, and s/he will develop an integrated fund raising strategy partnering with Vice Presidents, Deans, Department Heads, and others.

Functioning as the lead development and external relations officer for the university, this executive will have hands-on involvement in gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. In addition, the Vice President will oversee the university's primary public relations, marketing and communications functions, constituency relations, and community/government relations. Further, the Vice President is charged with significant responsibility for Board of Trustees development and stewardship.

The Vice President comes to campus at an especially significant time under the leadership of President James T. Harris III. As part of the executive leadership team, s/he will work with the President and colleagues in the institution's leadership to help implement the university's bold new vision and strategic plan, Envisioning 2024. The Vice President must possess exceptional leadership and communication skills to interact with various constituency groups, including academic, athletic and student leaders and organizations, as well as donors, alumni, parents, friends, and community groups. For more information on the Envisioning 2024 plan, visit http://www.sandiego.edu/envisioning-2024/.

The university will successfully conclude its current comprehensive campaign, Leading Change: The Campaign for USD, in June, exceeding its $300 million goal.

The ideal candidate will have the following professional qualifications and personal qualities:

Demonstrated experience with and understanding of Catholic perspectives in higher education
Because the role of the division includes effective communication with print and broadcast media, both public and diocesan, on current Catholic issues which may affect the University of San Diego, and because this office provides information concerning university-church relationships to non-Catholic constituents of the university, an administrator who communicates to the public on behalf of the university must have (1) an informed background on sensitive religious issues in contemporary Catholicism, (2) a thorough understanding of Church structure and decision-making, and (3) an ability to perceive and deal competently with widely divergent perspectives on current Catholic issues. Therefore, per the university's policy on position qualifications, the Vice President for University Advancement or the Associate Vice President for University Communications is required to be an informed and committed Roman Catholic.

Professional credentials and demonstrated development and management experience
Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred. At least ten years of successful experience in a non-profit development role, preferably in a college or university; demonstrated experience with comprehensive campaigns; advanced supervisory experience, including management of a comprehensive budget; have strong coaching and team building skills; demonstrate the capacity to mentor skilled staff members to reach their full potential.

Constituency development
Exhibited success in trustee and constituency development and stewardship; a demonstrated ability to serve a Board of Trustee committee(s) effectively. Possess an understanding of the effective integration of communications, marketing, fundraising, and constituency engagement with the mission and strategic vision of the university.

Leadership
Possess exemplary leadership skills, a proven record of success, a mature, charismatic personality, and be able to lead the university's advancement program while working in a close, collaborative environment. Have the ability to motivate and engage both internal and external constituencies to achieve the goals of the university. Possess integrity and the ability to build trust through one's own commitment to high personal and professional standards.

Service orientation
Exhibit a strong sense of service to higher education and a commitment to fostering the mission of a contemporary Catholic university.

Personal qualities
Honesty, transparency, capacity for mutual trust, sociability, confidence, humility, compassion, capacity to inspire and empower others, inquisitiveness and creativity, flexibility, capacity for thoughtful risk-taking and entrepreneurial endeavors, and a sense of humor.

The University will offer a competitive compensation package that will correspond to the experience and credentials of the candidate and will reflect the leadership responsibilities of the position. A relocation allowance will be provided if the selected candidate is not a resident of San Diego.

Applications should include:
1. A letter of introduction outlining the applicant's background and qualifications for the position. This letter should specifically address the leadership attributes and professional competencies for this position.
2. Curriculum vitae/resume.
3. Contact information for five professional references, at least one of whom is a person who has reported directly to you, a second who is a colleague, and a third who is an individual to whom you reported directly.

All documents should be submitted electronically to:
Andrew McMillin, Constituent Relations Manager
mcmillin@sandiego.edu

Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. For fullest consideration, applicant materials should be received by March 28, 2018. The ideal start date for the position is July 1, 2018.

The University of San Diego is an equal opportunity employer committed to diversity and inclusion and is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of the campus community.
