The University of Georgia Department of Theatre and Film Studies seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Lighting Design beginning in August, 2025. The candidate will teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level in lighting design and technology, design foundations, and other courses within the candidate's areas of specialization. The preferred candidate would have a secondary area of specialization in scenic design, projection design, or media. In addition to typical classroom activities the candidate will advise and recruit graduate students, supervise students' design process and theses, as well as participate in curriculum development. The candidate may be able to design 1-2 departmental productions a year.
Tenure and promotion will require that candidates maintain an active professional presence as a designer with a national reputation evidenced by a regional, commercial, and national record of achievements in theatrical lighting design and/or related fields.
THE PROGRAM: At the core of the 3-year Design MFA program is a focus on scenography training with students choosing primary, secondary, and tertiary areas of interest (scenic, lighting, costuming, or digital media). Our annual production season includes 4 fully produced shows which are supported by a technical director, a head electrician, a facilities manager, and by graduate assistants and student workers.
QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or equivalent terminal degree with at least 3-5 years of professional design experience and 1-3 years of teaching at the university level. Candidates without a terminal degree (or without a non-terminal master's degree) must document exceptional accomplishments in their respective field and must be approved for a terminal degree exception before hire. The candidate should demonstrate the ability to provide industry standard design related production packages (previsualization, plots, drafting, and supporting paperwork), and model clear and collaborative communication. The candidate must also be able to use and teach industry standard software such as Vectorworks, Lightwright, Capture and have a working knowledge of ETC lightboards. Must be currently legally eligible to work in the United States. United Scenic Artist Local 829 Union membership preferred, but not required.

THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Theatre and Film Studies is a unit of the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences. The NAST-accredited department encompasses the creation, practice, scholarship, and pedagogy in a wide range of media, including stage, film and 3D computer animation. We offer B.A. degrees in theatre and in film studies, MFA degrees in performance, design/technology and dramatic media, and the Ph.D. in theatre and performance studies.
